The UK census has yet to give exact figures, but already there are reported to be at least 167,000 same-sex family units in the United States. With high-profile couples choosing a mixture of adoption, surrogacy and donor insemination, the patchwork of twenty-first century family groupings is becoming encouragingly diverse.
